USCIS note: Answers will vary. [District of Columbia residents should answer that D.C. does not have a governor.]

Our explanation

The governor is in charge of the executive branch of a state government. Each of the 50 states has a governor. Washington, D.C., is not a state, so D.C. residents should say D.C. does not have a governor.

Remember it

The President leads the country; a governor leads a state.
