Depends on where you live

American Government · System of Government

65/20: USCIS’s Test Updates page also marks this question with a star. The USCIS question list does not, so we don’t star it. If you study for 65/20, learn this one too.

Depends on where you live

The answer is different for each state, for D.C., and for each U.S. territory. Look up the answer for the place where you live.

May change after November 3, 2026

Coming up on November 3, 2026: U.S. Senate elections in 35 states. This may change the answer in those places. Check again before your interview.

USCIS note: [District of Columbia residents and residents of U.S. territories should answer that D.C. (or the territory where the applicant lives) has no U.S. senators.]

Our explanation

Each state has two U.S. senators. They represent all the people of the state. Name either one. If you live in D.C. or a U.S. territory, say that it has no U.S. senators.

Remember it

Every state has two senators. Learn one name from your state and check it before your interview.
