Unofficial practice for the U.S. civics test

Get ready for the civics test, one question at a time

Read each question. Choose or type your answer. Then see the answers from the USCIS list, with a short, simple explanation.

This website is an independent study tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Department of Homeland Security, or any U.S. government agency. USCIS is the official source for naturalization test information. Always verify current requirements at USCIS.gov.

Who it is for

  • People getting ready for the U.S. citizenship (naturalization) interview.
  • People who are learning English. The words are simple, and small spelling mistakes are OK when you type.
  • Family members, friends, and teachers who help someone study.

How it works

  1. Pick your test.

Tell us when USCIS received your N-400 form, or that you have not filed yet. We show the questions for your test: 2025 or 2008.

  2. Study with multiple choice.

Pick the right answer from a short list. For “Name two” questions, you choose two answers.

  3. Practice the exam by typing.

Type your answers, like a practice interview. Each answer is graded for you right away. You see why, and you see the answers from the USCIS list.

  4. Keep up with answers that change.

Some answers change after elections, like the name of the Speaker of the House. We show who holds each office, and the date we checked.

On the real test, the officer asks the questions out loud, and you answer out loud. There are no answer choices. That is why the practice exam asks you to type your answers.

Which test will you take?

It depends on the date USCIS received your N-400 form. Your interview date does not matter. The new test started for forms received on or after October 20, 2025.
