What did the Emancipation Proclamation do?

American History · 1800s

Answers from the USCIS list

Give one of these answers.

  • Freed the slaves
  • Freed slaves in the Confederacy
  • Freed slaves in the Confederate states
  • Freed slaves in most Southern states

Our explanation

“Emancipation” means freedom, and “proclamation” means announcement. Lincoln signed it during the Civil War. It announced that enslaved people in most Southern states were free. Most were not actually freed until after the war ended.

Remember it

Emancipation means freedom, so the Proclamation “freed the slaves.”
