2025 test · Question 28 of 128
Why does each state have two senators?
Answers from the USCIS list
Give one of these answers. Words in light (parentheses) are optional.
- Equal representation optional: (for small states)
- The Great Compromise optional: (Connecticut Compromise)
Our explanation
Some Founders wanted representatives based on each state's number of people. Others wanted the same number for every state. The Great Compromise, an agreement, did both. The Senate gives every state two senators, so small states get equal representation.
Remember it
Great Compromise: House by people, Senate by state. Two senators each, big or small.
