2025 test · Question 18 of 128
What part of the federal government writes laws?
Answers from the USCIS list
Give one of these answers. Words in light (parentheses) are optional.
- optional: (U.S.) Congress
- optional: (U.S. or national) legislature
- Legislative branch
Our explanation
Congress, also called the Legislative Branch, writes federal laws. A new law starts as a bill, a written idea for a law. Both the House and the Senate must pass it. Then it goes to the President.
Remember it
Legislative sounds like "legal": it is the law-making branch, Congress.
